Idioms and proverbs in the novel El éxodo de Yangana (Yangana´s Exodus) by Ángel Felicísimo Rojas
Abstract
Idioms and sayings or proverbs are a testimonial and, above all, documentary linguistic record, coming from the individual and collective conscience of the popular wisdom of the inhabitants of a country, region or town; which have a marked didactic role in society and, therefore, in the family. Consequently, the objective of this article was to analyze the idioms and proverbs present in the novel El éxodo de Yangana by the Ecuadorian writer Ángel Felicísimo Rojas. In the novel under study there are several linguistic expressions used by his characters to communicate. Therefore, we take advantage of this linguistic corpus in order to study it from a sociolinguistic point of view. In that order, we used an interdisciplinary methodology, in which we included concepts from cultural anthropology, sociology and literary theory. For this purpose, we have used qualitative research which, because of its scientific nature, it implies a great descriptive rigor in the linguistic registers we use. In the end, we conclude that, in the lexical and phraseological field, these expressions constitute a linguistic variety of Ecuadorian Spanish.
